Common Trouble with IBM hard drives
With the desktop drives, frequent problem or trouble we see is that the drive remains silent when powered up. Possibly smell of burning from the pcb / electronics board. There is no sound and it may shut down the computer it is connected to - ie not allow it to boot up. For the laptop drives they may remain silent when powered without any spinning up.
