Common Trouble with Maxtor drives
1. Drive remains silent - Not spinning up
Particulalry external drives - frequent problem or trouble we see is that the drive remains silent when powered up. Possibly smell of burning from the pcb / electronics board. There is no sound and it may shut down the computer it is connected to - ie not allow it to boot up.
2. Incorrectly or not recognised in BIOS
Alternative problems affect the internal hard disks - eg, the Serial numbers shown in the BIOS - probably the serial number ends in a Z and no access to the data is allowed even though the drive is seen in BIOS. Particularly affects early maxtors like Athena, 6E040L0 Diamond Max which may display their alias "Maxtor Athena" in the BIOS rather than their correct model number.
3. Incorrect Powr Supply - Over-Voltage damage
We see many Maxtor external firewire / usb drives having incorrect power supply or reversed power supply/ polarity - often the person has used a laptop power brick by accident. Another trouble is "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" when booting the computer.
4. Difficulty reading files and folders from Maxtor Sata Hard Disk
The computer may appear to hang or be inactive for a long time while attempting to open or read files or folders. The computer may have to be re-booted to get things going again. We can recover your files and folders
